RESUMO

We investigated the effects of citric acid (CA) on cultured human osteoblastic (HOB) cells by evaluating cell adhesion, proliferation, and cytotoxicity. (3)H-Thymidine-labeled HOB cells were incubated in culture medium supplemented or not with 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% CA for 1 minute. After incubation, cell morphology was evaluated by Nomarski interferential light microscopy, cell proliferation was accessed by measurements of (3)H-thymidine associated to the cells, and cell lysis was monitored by measuring the amount of (3)H-thymidine released by cells. We observed that most of the CA-treated cells presented numerous atypical vacuoles, and such cells were also highly polymorphic, exhibiting round-shaped cells. Nonetheless, CA at all concentrations assayed did not yield cytotoxicity as measured by (3)H-containing DNA release, although significant decrease in cell proliferation was observed (P > .05). Furthermore, cells which were treated with CA at the lowest concentration assayed (4%) restored normal proliferation rates 3 days after treatment.

RESUMO

The objective of the present article is to report an uncommon case of a boy with history of 11 natal lost teeth, all belonging to the normal series of primary dentition, associated with absence of up to 21 permanent tooth germs. Such a condition resulted in the necessity for oral rehabilitation. Partial removable prostheses were used as a choice of treatment, and the patient will have to be constantly followed up so that new treatment approaches can be performed according to the patient’s development.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mothers' perceptions and expectations of the behavior of their children who were HIV positive, during dental treatment. The sample was composed of 40 mother and child pairs. The mothers answered seven questions during two different appointments (M1, the child's initial appointment, and M2, the child's treatment appointment) in order to identify their perceptions and expectations about their children's behavior during dental treatment. In addition, child's behavior during the appointments was evaluated. The results of the mothers' interviews were then correlated with their children's behavior using Spearman's correlation test (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between the mothers' perceptions and expectations and the behavior displayed by their children during dental treatment (p>0.05).

RESUMO

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder which mainly affects children. Oral changes, such as gingival ulceration, halitosis, osseous lesions associated with tooth mobility, and early loss of primary teeth, comprise the disease's first manifestations for most patients. In the long term, dental changes may occur as a result of dental and systemic treatment. Therefore, this study's purpose is to report Langerhans cell histiocytosis' effects on the permanent dentition 8 years after diagnosis, which had been established by performing a biopsy of gingival tissue on a 3-year-old patient.

RESUMO

Moebius syndrome (MS) is a rare disorder mainly characterized by bi- or unilateral palsy of the facial and abducens nerves. Among the various orofacial characteristics related to this syndrome, the following are pointed out, difficulty with sucking, tongue malformation, mandibular hypoplasia, saliva drooling, arched palate and micrognathia. In spite of the diversity of oral features described for these patients, self-inflicted oral trauma has not yet been reported. Therefore, the purposes of the present report were to describe an unusual case of a baby with Moebius syndrome who had a parafunctional habit that resulted in a persistent traumatic lesion of the lower lip, and discuss the treatment performed.
